Rwanda Rwanda helped President Kabila overthrow the former ruler of the then Zaire, President Mobutu, in 1997. But the alliance did not last long. Rwanda accuses President Kabila of supporting Hutu extremists who were responsible for the massacre of tens of thousands of Rwandans in 1994, and of discriminating against the ethnic Tutsis who had helped him to power. It has a strong military, which is well-armed and well-trained, but relatively small in number. President Kabila has called for all Rwandan troops to leave the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rwanda has acknowledged that its troops have been helping the rebels. |
