President Kabila took control of the then Zaire in 1997, overthrowing President Mobutu with Rwandan and Ugandan assistance.
Rebels
The rebellion began when President Kabila sent home Rwandan troops. Tutsis in the Congolese army rose in revolt and were joined by Tutsis from the east of the country.
