Chad

Chad was forced to admit it had troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo supporting President Kabila when they were ambushed by rebels in the north of the country. The government said two soldiers were killed but the rebels said they had killed at least 100. A senior opposition figure and former prime minister, Jean Alingue, has called on the government to withdraw. He said President Idriss Deby had not consulted parliament before deploying the troops. Chadian officials say Chad is showing gratitude for the support given by Kinshasa - under President Mobutu - to Chad during its war with Libya in the 1980s.
