As the Taleban fall back to their strongholds in southern Afghanistan US led coalition forces are beginning to arrive in the region.
British special forces are securing the Bagram airbase as a possible bridgehead for more troops and aid, while French troops are to take up a similar role in Mazar-e-Sharif.
US and British forces have been active in Mazar-e-Sharif, where they helped Northern Alliance troops quell a revolt by Taleban prisoners.
US special forces have been in Afghanistan for some time now and Germany, Canada, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia are also considering sending troops to the region.
