Aid is also being shipped into northern Afghanistan by river from Uzbekistan. The convoys face a treacherous journey over difficult terrain and dangers from armed militias - four journalists were killed on the Kabul route - and supplies in Mazar-e-Sharif and Jalalabad have been looted.
