The Uzbek Government has long feared the influence of militant Islam and the trade in drugs from Afghanistan, and is no friend to the Taleban.
Shortly before the air campaign against Afghanistan began, US light infantry were dispatched to Uzbekistan. Now President Islam Karimov has allowed the US access to Uzbek airspace and a military base, for humanitarian purposes.
The foreign ministry warned it was too early to congratulate the Northern Alliance, but said the capture of Kabul must become an important step towards establishing peace in Afghanistan and setting up a coalition government.
