Delhi offered the US all possible help, but has expressed concerns that the US-led action could create an Islamic militant backlash in Muslim regions such as the areas of Kashmir that it administers.

The government has repeated its demand that the Pakistani authorities act more effectively against militants on their own territory - a reference mainly to groups fighting the Indian army in Kashmir.

Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee says the Taleban should not be involved in any future government in Afghanistan. Some moderate elements could be included but not in the name or in the shape of the Taleban, he said.
