Germany
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is to ask parliament for a vote of confidence over his government's offer of troops to help the US-led campaign in Afghanistan

Mr Schroeder is seeking to stamp out dissent in Germany’s governing coalition over the deployment, which could lead to the country's first combat mission outside Europe since World War II.

The chancellor wants to send up to 3,900 troops, including 100 special forces, a concrete expression of what he describes as "unlimited solidarity" with Washington.
