| Canberra, one of America’s strongest allies in the region, has firmly backed the US airstrikes. Prime Minister John Howard has announced that Australia is sending 1,550 military personnel, including 150 elite SAS troops, to join the US-led campaign by mid-November. Mr Howard, who fighting a general election campaign, warned the country to expect casualties, if the SAS goes in on the ground. The opposition has backed the decision to send Australian troops. |
