Marshals could carry firearms but a shoot-out in mid-air is obviously highly dangerous.

Aviation experts say planes are unlikely to be brought down by a small hole caused by a bullet but there is always the risk of a bullet hitting one of the aircraft’s vital components.

Other proposals include using so-called soft bullets, which would not penetrate the hull, or electric stun guns. These weapons are already being considered by London police as an alternative to firearms.
