3: Cockpit

Bullet-proof doors to the flight deck have been proposed. On El Al flights, air crew have to pass through two armoured doors to get to the flight deck. They also have to lock one before the other will open.

But on many aircraft this will mean a complete redesign of the cockpit to allow safe emergency exit for the flight crew and all the facilities they need during flight such as a galley and a lavatory.

Introduction of secure cockpit doors will not protect the cabin crew serving passengers. It is thought that hijackers who launched the attacks on America on 11 September took cabin staff hostage.
