|Abdullah Abdullah (Tajik)
Who he is: Dr Abdullah Abdullah has retained his position as foreign minister in the interim administration. He speaks several languages - including fluent English - and is a qualified doctor.
He has emerged as a key spokesperson for the alliance, and is heavily involved in discussions on Afghanistan's future government.
Abdullah was a close friend of the recently assassinated Northern Alliance commander, General Ahmed Shah Massoud.
What he believes: Dr Abdullah is less willing to compromise with other tribal groups than Younis Qanooni or Mohammed Fahim. He is seen by many Afghans as the staunchest defender of the Northern Alliance's grip on power. But like Qanooni, Fahim and Khan, he is a member of Jamiat-e-Islami, the largest political party in the alliance, led by Burhanuddin Rabbani.
