Return to East Timor
Hundreds of thousands of East Timorese returned home in 1999 after fleeing militias opposed to independence earlier in the year. For those who fled to West Timor, the repatriation was tricky. Anti-independence militia groups controlled the camps, terrorizing those who wished to leave.
