More than 1.5 million Kurds fled northern Iraq in 1991, following Saddam Hussein's military campaign against a Kurdish rebellion. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Kurds were stranded in snow-covered peaks after Turkey refused to allow them over the border. Many did not survive.
