Since the 1980s tens of thousand of people have died in the civil war between Sri Lanka's government and the Tamil Tigers, who are seeking a separate homeland. Several hundred thousand Tamil civilians have fled the island, many to India. They flee both discrimination from the Sinhalese majority and harrassment by government troops, and the Tamil Tigers who try to coerce their kinsmen to their cause, and recruit child soldiers.
