3. Germany
Germany has the largest refugee population in western Europe. However the UK admitted more asylum seekers in 2000. In the last 10 years the number of asylum seekers in Germany has more than halved - most have come from the former Yugoslavia, Turkey, Iraq and Iran. Cash benefits amount to about $38 (£27) a month. Other assistance is given in kind. All asylum seekers are placed in reception centres for up to three months, and are not allowed to work.
