Since 1948, the United Nations has deployed more than 50 peacekeeping missions - and 40 of these have been since 1988.

From monitoring ceasefires when the warring parties have already agreed to stop fighting, to peace enforcement and armed intervention, UN soldiers have learned some painful lessons.
