Haiti has become one of the most important transit points for cocaine in the Caribbean. Close to Colombia, extremely poor and with no effective government for the past three years, it has been used as a staging post for trafficking cocaine from Colombia to the United States, in particular Miami. Despite backing from the US officials, Haiti’s police and coastguard lack resources and have not succeeded in clamping down decisively on the traffickers.
