Morocco is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of cannabis - Europe's main supplier, along with Lebanon. An estimated 2,000 tonnes of Moroccan cannabis reaches Europe annually, often travelling across the straits of Gibraltar to Spain in the form of hashish. In many parts of northern Morocco, cannabis cultivation is the backbone of the economy. Government efforts to eradicate the illegal trade have been hampered by a shortage of resources.
The country is also a transit country for hard drugs such as heroin and cocaine, heading for Europe.
