Michael Ancram was eliminated after the first round re-match on 12 July. He took just 17 votes, being edged out by David Davis who took 18. At the top of the ballot was Michael Portillo who took 50 votes, then came Iain Duncan Smith with 42 votes and Ken Clarke with 39 votes.

Michael Ancram came joint last in the first round of voting, taking 21 votes. David Davis also took 21 votes, Michael Portillo came top with 49, Iain Duncan Smith took 39 and Ken Clarke took 36.

Those MPs who declared their support for Ancram before the first vote included: Michael Ancram, Crispin Blunt, Peter Bottomley, Tim Collins, Charles Hendry, Stephen O'Brien, Jonathan Sayeed, Tim Boswell, Eleanor Laing, Malcolm Moss, John Taylor, Ann Widdecombe.
