Born 7 July 1945. Married 1975, Lady Jane Fitzalan-Howard, daughter of 16th Duke of Norfolk; two children.

Education Ampleforth; Christ Church, Oxford (BA history); Edinburgh University (LLB).

Life before politics Advocate, Scottish Bar 1970.

Political career Unsuccessfully contested West Lothian in 1970. Elected MP for Berwickshire and East Lothian February 1974 - losing the seat at the second general election in October that year. Elected MP for Edinburgh South in 1979, losing the seat in 1987. MP for Devizes since 1992.

Junior Scottish minister 1983-97; Northern Ireland minister 1993-97; constitutional affairs spokesman 1997-98; Conservative Party chairman 1998-2001.

Outside interests director of several family agricultural firms.
