Kenneth Harry Clarke

Education Nottingham High School; Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge (BA, LLB); president, Cambridge Union 1963.

Life before politics Barrister-at-Law, called to the bar 1963; QC in 1980.

Political career Unsuccessfully contested Mansfield, Notts, at the 1964 and 1966 general elections. Elected MP for Rushcliffe in 1970.

PPS to solicitor general 1971-72; junior transport minister 1979-82; health minister 1982-85; paymaster general and employment minister 1985-87; chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and trade minister 1987-88; health secretary 1988-90; education secretary 1990-92; home secretary 1992-93; chancellor 1993-97; contested leadership of the Conservative Party June 1997; president, Tory Reform Group.

Outside interests Chairman, Alliance UniChem; director, Foreign & Colonial Investment Trust; deputy chairman, British American Tobacco; director, Independent News & Media.
