Born 9 April 1954. Married 1982, Hon Elizabeth Wynne Fremantle, daughter of Commander 5th Baron Cottesloe; four children.

Education HMS Conway (Cadet School); University of Perugia, Italy; RMA Sandhurst; Dunchurch College of Management.

Life before politics Lieutenant and then captain, Scots Guards 1975-81; ADC to Major-General Sir John Acland, commander of Commonwealth monitoring force in Zimbabwe 1979-81; executive, GEC Marconi 1981 ; director, Bellwing Property 1988-89; director, Jane's Information Group 1989-92.

Political career Unsuccessfully contested Bradford West in 1987. Elected MP for Chingford (now Chingford & Woodford Green) 1992.

Shadow social security secretary 1997-99; shadow defence secretary 1999-2001.

Outside interests consultant to Fortress Holdings plc; consultant to Wicksteed Engineering.
