PAUL MURPHY
Nothern Ireland Secretary

Paul Murphy's latest job is likely to raise a profile that has remained stubbornly low, despite having been in the cabinet for several years.

This is partly down to the fact that once the Welsh Assembly was established in 1999, he became Welsh Secretary - a job with not as much left to do. His new role will be very different: He goes to the Northern Ireland Office at yet another crisis point in the peace process, with the Northern Ireland Assembly currently suspended.

He is not a stranger to the department, however, having served there as a junior minister after Labour won the 1997 election.

His naturally unflashy manner, preferring to fix things quietly backstage, made him a perfect deputy for Mo Mowlam - and meant he played a crucial, though low-key, role in the Good Friday negotiation agreements.
