LORD WILLIAMS OF MOSTYN
Leader of the Lords

Lord Williams of Mostyn, who succeeds Baroness Jay as leader of the lords, was a home office minister dealing with such issues as immigration before he became attorney general.

In that role, he was the government's chief legal adviser and it was claimed by the Tories to have opposed the government's efforts to restrict the right for trial by jury.

The former barrister and deputy High Court judge was chairman of the Bar Council in the early 1990s and was made a life peer in 1992.

Lord Williams also has a strong academic background - he has held a host of top university positions and is pro-chancellor of the University of Wales.
