ALAN MILBURN
Secretary of State for Health

Alan Milburn is regarded as a central figure in the government - a very able and energetic minister and firmly committed to New Labour ideology.

As a junior health minister under Frank Dobson he was the driving force behind much of Labour's NHS reform, and was promoted to chief secretary - the start of many a cabinet career.

As health secretary, he has not been afraid to use private resources and private money, to the consternation of some in the Labour party. He entered the Commons in 1992 after a career in trade unionism and local government.
