JOHN PRESCOTT
Deputy PM

John Prescott faced one of the toughest tasks of Labour's first term in getting on top of his transport, environment and regions brief - even before a succession of controversies kept his department firmly in the spotlight.

In the end that sprawling department was broken up, with Stephen Byers taking responsibility for transport, regions and local government and Mr Prescott heading up the newly created Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

When Mr Byers resigned, the regions and local government briefs landed back in his in-tray, meaning Mr Prescott will steer through plans for regional devolution - one of the prime causes of his long political career.

The former merchant seaman remains the bridge between Prime Minister Tony Blair's "New" Labour and "Old" Labour and - as deputy leader of the party - has the democratic support of the membership.
