Train approaches Potters Bar

The train was not due to stop at Potters Bar and so approached the station at approximately 100 miles per hour.

It was just outside the station that the terrible accident took place.

The last carriage derailed as it sped across the railway bridge over Darkes Lane.

Part of the train smashed into the top of the bridge sending masonry and debris onto the road below. Eyewitnesses described clouds of smoke up to 60 feet high.
