The Cambridge Cruiser, a class 365 electric train, began its journey without incident at 1245 BST on Friday.
The short trip was only due to take just over an hour and a half, and Potters Bar was not one of its seven scheduled stops.
The train suffered a fatal derailment only a few minutes after leaving London.
The accident, which has claimed seven lives, happened on a stretch of track just miles from the site of the Hatfield disaster.
