Beacons across the UK

Nearly 2,000 beacons will be lit across the UK on Monday evening in one of the centrepieces of the weekend of jubilee celebrations.

The nationwide chain of beacons will be lit as night begins to fall. The first zone, which covers Scotland and Northern Ireland, will begin proceedings at 2130BST.

The chain will move south as the following zones light up in sequence every 15 minutes, until they reach London.

Once all the beacons are burning in the capital, the Queen herself will light the National Beacon at 2245BST in front of Buckingham Palace.
