By the time of her death, aged 101, the Queen Mother had become a national institution and was seen by many as the nation's favourite grandmother.

Her death, in March 2002, was only weeks after the death of her daughter, Princess Margaret, the Queen's younger sister.

That two such heavy blows should fall on the Queen so quickly only served to increase public support for her in her Golden Jubilee year.
