This is the latest of the privately financed prisons, only just opened, and little is has been heard yet about how it is operating. The contractor, Premier Prison Services, now runs more penal establishments in the UK than any of the other private companies. Dovegate is effectively two prisons in one. The majority of the prisoners, about 600, are Category B. But within a higher security compound within the prison, a “therapeutic community” is being set up where another 200 inmates will receive treatment from psychologists for a wide range of offending behaviour. This will be only the second establishment of its type within the Prison Service, and a new departure for the private sector.
