The number of cases of foot-and-mouth disease continues to escalate on a daily basis. By 8 March the total number of cases passes 100. By 13 March it reaches 200.

During the 1967 epidemic 400,000 animals were slaughtered and the disease took six months to get under control. The current outbreak is far more geographically widespread than the disease was in 1967.
