In January 1936 King George V died. The succession passed to Albert's elder brother, Edward. But Edward was forced to give up the throne to his younger brother after he decided to marry an American divorcee, Wallis Simpson. Quite unexpectedly, Elizabeth had been thrust into the role of consort to the monarch. Her husband became the new king, George VI. They were crowned in May 1937.
