The young Elizabeth and her brother David
Early years
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was born on 4 August 1900, during the last few months of the reign of Queen Victoria. The daughter of Lord and Lady Glamis, she was the ninth of ten children. Closest in age to her younger brother David, the two children spent much of their childhood at the family’s English country home in Hertfordshire and in Scotland at the remote Glamis Castle. Elizabeth attended school only briefly and was mainly educated by a private tutor in the tradition of the time.
