COMMONS' LOBBY
The Commons side of Westminster Palace is markedly less ostentatious than the Lords'. The Commons' Corridor is relatively plain, save for several paintings depicting moments in the history of Parliament. And the Commons' Lobby (a) - also known as the Members' Lobby - is also less highly decorated than its peers' counterpart. The Commons' chamber was destroyed in the Second World War, and had to be rebuilt, but the archway from the Lobby remains, with bomb damage still visible (b). Statues of several former great prime ministers feature in the lobby, with the black from Churchill's foot famously rubbed away where MPs have repeatedly touched it for luck on entering the chamber before a speech (c). There are rumours that one plinth which remains unfilled will one day see a statue of Baroness Thatcher, although one cannot be erected until at least 20 years after the chosen premier has left office. Here also, hangs a stunning chandelier (d), whose grandeur enhances the intricately decorated ceiling.
