Start
With 4.5 miles to travel, you would not think getting a good start is vital. But some jockeys want to get their horses a clear view of the first fence and others want to settle their mounts at the rear. In 1993, there was a false start and confusion between the starter and the recall man meant part of the field setting off while the rest stopped. The resulting debacle led to an outcry and reform of the procedure.
