Envisat: THE FACTS
 •  Cost: 2.3 billion euros (1.4 bn).
 •  Size: The size of a double-decker bus.
 •  Weight: 8.2 tonnes at launch.
 •  Launcher: Ariane 5 rocket from Europe's spaceport at Kourou, French Guiana.
 •  Orbit: Will circle the earth every 100 minutes at an altitude of 800 km.
 •  Lifetime: at least 5 years in orbit.
 •  Purpose: To gather vital data on the Earth and its environment. To help scientists gain a greater understanding of climate change and the depletion of the ozone layer.
 •  Participating states: Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands, UK.
