Envisat will circle the Earth every 100 minutes from an altitude of 800 kilometres.

As the Earth rotates beneath it, the satellite’s instruments can scan every point on the globe over the course of a few days.

The satellite always flies over a particular area of the Earth at the same local time allowing pictures or data recorded on different days to be compared.
