Many in Russia did not want to abandon Mir and an international search began to look for sponsors. Few were forthcoming despite the steadily falling price that Russian authorities placed on the space station.
In August, Mir was abandoned after its 27th expedition due to a lack of government funding. |

Yet this was the year one of the most difficult spacewalks ever was undertaken.
