The decade-long construction of Mir was completed with the addition of the Priroda module. It contained an observation platform to study the Earth and a laboratory to study materials in space. Unlike the other modules, it was not equipped with its own solar power units.
Priroda's cargo also contained a large amount of equipment for Nasa's astronaut Shannon Lucid, who was on board the space station. Two more dockings with the US space shuttle also took place this year. |
Lucid completed a 179-day mission this year, setting a new US record for long-duration spaceflight.
While on board she performed experiments in microgravity science, space sciences, and Earth observation. She also continues to hold the international record for the most flight hours in orbit by any non-Russian. | |
