Kvant 2, a biological research station, was added in December 1989.
Like Kvant 1, it also contained a gyroscope-like device called a gyrodyne which was used to control Mir’s direction in space and keep the platform's solar panels pointing towards the Sun so its supply of electricity would not diminish. It also contained new life support systems for recycling water and generating oxygen on board the station. |
During this year Mir was left unmanned for four months, from April to September, due to damage to the Soyuz spacecraft.
After this year it was continuously occupied for nearly 10 years. | |
