The Majlis, or parliament, is elected by popular vote every four years. The present parliament is dominated by the reformists. Constitutionally recognised minorities are also represented. The speaker is Mr Mehdi Karrubi, a reformist and leftist clergyman. Under the Islamic constitution, the Majlis cannot be dissolved. Elections were held even when Iran was being bombed by Iraq.
