Ministers are chosen by the president and approved by parliament, which can also impeach them. However, the Supreme Leader is closely involved in defence, security and foreign policy and in practice, ministers will often report to him. Ministers responsible for cultural and social issues are kept under close watch by the conservatives who are wary about anything they see as a deviation from a pure Islamic line. The cabinet is chaired by the president or vice-president, who is responsible for cabinet affairs.
