The key figures of the Bristol inquiry

Introduction

The scandal surrounding heart surgery on babies at Bristol Royal Infirmary has been an open wound for parents and doctors for the past five years.

This week, the public inquiry launched in 1998 to find out what happened at the hospital finally delivers its reports, which will certainly cause major upheaval in many parts of the NHS.

The doctors involved feel they have been scapegoated, while many parents believe that they should have been punished more severely for their failings.

The inquiry looked back to the early part of the 1980s to try to uncover the root of the problem, and BBC News Online traces the key events in the developing crisis over the past 20 years.
