Russia's stricken sub Intro Making it safe Lifting Docking

Raising the Kursk

Lifting

The submarine will be lifted by attaching 26 massive cables from a huge barge to the submarine’s hull. Divers will first have to cut 70cm-wide holes in the hull to secure the cables. Hydraulic lifting systems positioned along the length of the barge will raise the submarine, displacing 18,300 tonnes of water, in an operation that is expected to take 12 to 15 hours to complete.
