1995: The borders come down
Austria, Finland and Sweden join the Union, bringing membership up to 15.
Most continental Europeans can now leave their passports at home as the Schengen agreement comes into force and scraps border controls. France, Germany, Portugal, Spain and the Benelux countries are the first to put the agreement in place, followed later by Austria, Italy, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Greece. The UK and Ireland stay out of the agreement due to fears of terrorism and illegal immigration. |
