Kosovo
 VIOLENCE

The war was fought with the aim of building a multi-ethnic Kosovo, but hundreds of people have been killed across the province since June in violence between Albanians and Serbs.
No one knows how many have died. Estimates in February ranged from 488 (UN) to 793 (Yugoslav authorities).
The main flashpoint has become the divided northern town of Mitrovica. Serbs dominate the north side of the River Ibar, Albanians the south.
Mitrovica is seen as the crucial test of whether the international community can create the conditions for the two groups to live side by side.
Kosovo Albanians have also taken revenge on the province's 30,000 Romas, or gypsies, whom they accuse of siding with the Serbs.
Some analysts fear that when Kosovo's Albanians realise the UN is not about to hand them independence on a plate, they will turn their firepower on the K-For peacekeepers, perceiving them as the new occupiers.
Another conflict is brewing just outside Kosovo in the Presevo region of Serbia where about 70,000 Albanians live.
