Inside the Kirsk
1. Reactors
The Kursk was powered by two nuclear reactors. According to Russian officials, both were shut down when the submarine plunged to the bottom of the sea. This will have left the vessel with little or no power for heat, lighting and air purification. The submarine would normally have back-up batteries which would provide some power for a limited period. According to one report the Kursk may have left port without them.
