Introduction

Over the last 10 years Russia has been making the difficult transition from communism to democracy. Emerging from the disintegration of the Soviet Union, it has faced a multitude of problems, ranging from an attempted coup to civil unrest and separatist conflict. The Russian economy and Russian society have changed beyond recognition, while the country's position within the international community has fundamentally altered.
